Senri talks “Hmmm Album and Concert”
2019年10月に『Hmmm』ソロツアー シカゴ公演後、会場からは鳴り止まないスタンディングオベーションで終えた大江さんに、シカゴ公演のことや現在の活動について伺った。
シカゴでの3回目のコンサートお疲れ様でした。3年連続Piano forteで行ったコンサートの心境をお聞かせください。
Congratulations on your third concert in Chicago. Please tell us about your concerts at the Piano forte for three consecutive years.
Senri: お客さんとの距離が近いので毎回がスリルと緊張の連続のPiano Forteなのですが、嬉しいことにスタンデイングオベーションが2年連続で起こりました。汗びっしょりの中で「やった！」と充実感を噛み締めていました。3年続けてきて徐々にですが広がってきているのを感じます。
The Piano Forte is always thrilling and at the same time it makes me nervous because the distance to the audience is so close, but I’m so glad that a standing ovation took place for a second consecutive year.I was nervous and enthusiastic about the feeling of fulfillment and the audience could see my sweat.I feel that my progress has been growing for three years.
今回のPiano forteで用意されたピアノはイタリアのFazioliということで、大江さんは演奏を楽しみにしていたということでしたが。
Piano forte set up the stage and the piano for your performance. The piano was created in Italy and is a Fazioli and Senri was looking forward to his performance using this elegant piano.
Senri: 素晴らしいコンデイションのピアノでした。スタンウエイだからとか、ベーゼンドルファーだからとか僕はあまり選り好みはないんですが、今度のピアノは特に「いいらしい」という噂を聞いていたので、演奏前から楽しみでした。力を入れなくても指に吸い付くような鍵盤で、軽やかでした。ジャズ独特のテンションコードが効果的に聞こえるのも、一個一個の音の音の響きのクオリティがあってこそだと合わさって綺麗に聞こえるんだと思いました。
The piano was in great condition, although, I don’t have much preference for whether it’s a Steinway or Bösendorfer, but I’ve heard from fellow pianists that the Fazioli piano is particularly good, so I was excited about playing. The piano had a light feeling and the keyboard sticks to my fingers was relaxing. I thought that the jazz-specific tension code could be heard effectively, and because of the quality of the sound of each individual note, I thought it would sound beautiful together.
シカゴの印象をお聞かせください。
What is your impression of Chicago?
Senri: 最初はクールな街という印象がありましたが、実際に回を重ねて訪れると「昔の名残のある街角」に目がいって「古き良きアメリカ」があちこちにあることに気がつきます。そんな景色の中にある行きつけの日本食屋さんや焼肉屋さんを訪れるのも自分の中での秘かな楽しみです。
At first, I had the impression that I would be visiting a cool city after visiting Chicago many times I’m always impressed with the cities old-school landscape and style the architecture and design that Chicago offers as beautiful I also enjoy visiting my favorite Japanese restaurants including Yakiniku.
毎回日本人と同じくらい地元の方が多く来場していることを見受けられました。また他州からもコンサートに足を運んだ方がいることも聞きました。『Hmmm』のアルバムが9月20日にアメリカで販売開始され、シカゴも含め世界を各地で演奏ツアー中の大江さんでございますが、ツアーの印象をお聞かせください。
I thought your local audience was increasing. I felt that Senri Jazz success was spreading all over the world. “Hmmm” album was released in the United States on September 20, and Senri has been to concert tours around the world, including Chicago. What is your impression of the tour?
Senri: ツアーは現在も続行中です。1/20にはNYの老舗バードランドシアターでトリオライブを8時半から、1/27にはワシントンDCのブルーズアレーでトリオライブを８時と10時に開演します。おっしゃる通りアメリカ人のお客様が随分来られるようになりました。去年行ったローマのグレゴリージャズクラブでのライブではフィンランドやロンドンからもお客様がいらしてましたよ。シカゴにも他州からもコンサートに足を運んでいただけて感謝です。本当にありがとうございます。「ローマは1日にしてならず」毎回毎回を「一期一会」と思って最高のライブをやり続けるだけです。
The tour is continuing. We have a trio concert in January, the Birdland Theater in NY at 1/20/20 8:30pm and the Blues Array in Washington, DC at 1/27/20 8pm and 10pm. As you mentioned, American audience have come to the fore. Last year at the Gregory Jazz Club in Rome, we had audiences from Finland and London. I was so glad for my Chicago ‘s concert from other states. Thank you very much. I will do the best concert for every time.
『Hmmm』のアルバムで苦労されたことはありますか？
Have you had any difficulties with “Hmmm” album?
Senri: 父が亡くなった直後のレコーデイングで一度はやれるかなと弱気になったのですが、やはり人生はローラーコースター、途中で降りちゃったら何も生まれないと思い直し、敢行しました。ロックアウトで夜中までとってあったスタジオですがなんと6時間に９曲がいい感じで終わりました。Ari Hoenig(ds) , Matt Clohesy(bass)という盟友あってこそできたことだと思います。エンジニアのDaniel Albaにも感謝してます。もちろんスタジオにいたぴちゃん（愛犬）にも（笑）
The album was recorded shortly after my father passed away, I was depressed and I felt so sad that I almost canceled my work but life is a roller coaster, and if I got off on this way of thinking I realized that nothing would be better and I so I went to the studio! In the studio we ended up with 9 songs in 6 hours. Ari Hoenig (ds) and Matt Clohesy (bass) are my best friends and I couldn’t have done this without them. Thanks also to engineer Daniel Alba.
